Green Gym maintaining NHS Commemorative Garden in Newbury

Newbury and Thatcham Green Gym has been involved in maintaining the newly planted NHS Commemorative Garden at Old Hospital Green, Andover Road, Newbury. The work mainly involves weeding and edging flower beds containing a range of medicinal plants.

Owing to our commitments to other tasks on Monday mornings, the volunteers have elected to undertake this specific task on a different day of the week. This will usually be on a Tuesday or Friday morning, between 10:00-12:30, depending on the weather on the Tuesday. As the tasks include weeding, if it is rainy, the task will be rearranged for the Friday.

Our final session for 2024 was on Tuesday 12th November, and we are now having a well-earned break until spring 2025.

Please watch the website and emails or contact us for further details.

Funding from Newbury Building Society’s Community Support Scheme

We are very grateful to Newbury Building Society’s Community Support Scheme who generously awarded us funding to purchase 2 tree poppers in October 2023.  These devices can be used to uproot invasive species such as holly in areas of heathland.  Their use helps to prevent regrowth which tends to arise when loppers are used for cutting, thus making our work more effective.

Working with the Greener Greenham Group

Some Green Gym volunteers work periodically with the Greener Greenham Group, a small group of volunteers who aim to improve the local environment in the Greenham area.  Previous tasks have included bulb and tree planting.
